Employee Spotlight – January 2012

Cathy Koontz Profile PhotographThis month we turn the spotlight on Candy Koontz a member of the Lake Havasu support team. Candy moved to Lake Havasu about 5 years ago to be near her sister and has been with Pitzer in various roles since July 2006.

So where are you from? I was originally born in Indianapolis and moved to Palo Alto, California when I was 6. We moved around a bit until I was in Junior High year, when we settled in Costa Mesa. I lived there for 30 years.

After High School what did you do in Costa Mesa? I worked for 5 years at the Hoag Hospital and was the Billing Manager when I left. Also, my parents had an Antique shop that I ran for a couple of years. Later I spent 15 years in the Mortgage Industry at Impact Funding, where I was the VP of Operations.

How did you get to Lake Havasu City? My sister’s husband was a member of the LA Sherriff’s office and retired. They moved out here 7 years ago and 2 years later we followed them. My sister and I are very close.

Tell us about your family. Well, to start, I am the youngest of 12 children. We lost one brother a little over 40 years ago, but thankfully the rest of us are still alive and kicking. My soul mate, Larry and I have been together for 19 years.

12 kids! Wow. Sorry to hear about your brother, how’d he pass away? He was 18 years old and had always wanted to be an actor. He had been successful in getting a part in the TV show Dragnet and at a cast party in San Pedro, after the filming, he fell off a boat and drowned. The episode never was broadcast at my mother’s request.

Wow, that’s interesting. You also have another show-biz connection, tell us about that. Yes! Larry was a cast member of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Las Vegas production Starlight Express. What was that? It was a Rock Musical at the Las Vegas Hilton. The story follows a child's dream in which his toy train set comes to life; famously the actors perform wearing roller skates.

So what do you guys do for fun? As you know, I am a voracious reader. Larry and I love to go antiquing, dancing, walking and we like to crafts where we make things with stained glass, wire sculpture and beads. Of course we like to spend time with my sister and her husband every Saturday.

Editor’s Note: Thanks Candy for sharing with us this month. We are very glad to have you on the team!
